The church is a place of tranquility, where prayer, silence and occasional choir singing reign. But from the church in the Spanish town of Illanera, you won't hear begging and singing, but spinning wheels and excited shouts. The La Iglesia Skate team transformed the interior of the 100-year-old church into a skate park. The nave, where there are pews for the faithful, has been replaced by a half-pipe, a presbytery with an altar, a sofa and a table, and the frescoes by picturesque graffiti.

A church might not seem like an ideal place to live, but the architects at Scrafano Architects have convinced us otherwise, who, in collaboration with Linc Thelen Design, turned an empty church in Chicago into a beautiful family apartment. The pews, pulpit, altar, confessionals and other religious "furniture" had to go, replaced by minimalist, secular pieces of furniture, while the "belly" of the church remained intact, including the beautiful arched windows and stained glass windows. Thus, history and modernity meet in every room.

It is true that usually the construction of churches takes many years, but the charming "Tree Church" in New Zealand took four years to grow. And literally. It is made from trees that Brian Cox planted on his property. Long or not, the "construction" took as long as the trees took, and the result is absolutely wonderful.
