Trick for shiny, streak-free windows: a homemade mixture that works better than store-bought cleaners

For shiny windows, you need the right sequence, a homemade mixture, and one rule that most people skip.

Dirty windows have a special talent: they make your apartment feel like you're living in a slightly blurry documentary from the 90s. Dust, fingerprints, raindrops, pollen, and those mysterious stains that no one in the household "knows" about, of course, slowly accumulate until the sun one morning reveals the whole crime scene.

To get streak-free windows, you don't need expensive cleaners, professional equipment, or your neighbor's high-pressure optimism. All you need are a few basic ingredients, the right technique, and a little patience. The key isn't to attack the window with all your might, but to clean it smartly—from dust to a final shine.

Remove the dust first – otherwise you’ll be making muddy art

Before spraying the window with cleaner, first remove dry dust, cobwebs and fine dirt. Use a dry cloth, duster or soft brush to wipe the glass, frames, corners and window sills.

This step is tedious but necessary. Spraying the cleaner directly onto the dust will give you the closest thing to homemade mud on glass. Aesthetic? No. Effective? Even less so.

Homemade window cleaning mixture

For a basic cleaner, mix in a spray bottle:

  • 2 cups of warm water
  • 1 cup of white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of dish detergent

Shake the bottle gently to combine the ingredients. The vinegar helps dissolve stains and mineral deposits, while the detergent tackles greasy marks—especially those left behind by children, pets, or adults who “just take a quick look out the window.”

Important: Do not mix baking soda directly with vinegar in a closed spray bottle. The combination will start to fizz and the cleaning effect will be reduced. Baking soda is great, but it is better to use it separately – as a paste for window grooves and stubborn edges.

Spray, wait, then wipe

Spray the cleaner evenly onto the glass, especially on grease stains, fingerprints and water marks. Then leave it on for 2 to 3 minutes. This is the time when you are doing nothing – a surprisingly rare and luxurious experience when cleaning.

The cleaner softens the dirt during this time, so you don't have to scrub later like you're polishing a window for a royal visit.

Rub gently but systematically

To wipe, use a microfiber cloth, soft sponge, or gentle cleaning agent. Wipe in circular motions, using an old toothbrush to get into window crevices and corners.

For very dirty grooves, you can make a paste of baking soda and a few drops of water. Apply it to the dirt, leave it for a minute or two, then scrub with a toothbrush and wipe with a damp cloth.

The no-stain rule: always from top to bottom

Wipe the windows from top to bottom. Why? Because dirty water flows downwards – physics is unfortunately unforgiving and rather rude here. If you start at the bottom, you will later let the upper dirt fall over the already cleaned part.

Once you've wiped the glass, dry it with a dry microfiber cloth, newspaper, or glass squeegee. The goal is to avoid leaving any droplets on the surface, as these are often the cause of spots.

When is the best time to clean windows?

Clean your windows early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Direct, hot sunlight dries the cleaner too quickly, even before you wipe it off thoroughly, leaving streaks on the glass. A sunny day is great for a coffee on the balcony, but not so great for a perfectionist window cleaning.

If the windows are very dirty, repeat the process. For stubborn stains, it is better to clean twice gently than once aggressively.

Conclusion

The best trick for clean windows isn't a magic ingredient, but the right order: dust first, then cleaner, a short action, a gentle wipe, and a quick drying without delay. Once you get the hang of this routine, your windows will be clean, the light will be brighter, and your apartment will suddenly look tidier – like you have your life under control. At least through the glass.
