The smallest Volvo, which signaled a new direction in Volvo design when it was introduced, was our first impression when looking at the test C30 with a diesel 100 kilowatt engine and a Powershift automatic transmission. The car is perfect for individualists who hate a lot of luggage, because the luggage compartment under the glass cover is not exactly an example of an abundance of space. The finishing touch is provided by the R-design equipment package, which conveys our sporty attitude. This is reflected in the sporty two-tone seats, the sports steering wheel with an aluminum element, gauges on a blue background, aluminum pedals and the plaque on the R-design grille. We were impressed by the excellent rain sensors that controlled the wipers, the xenon headlights, the dual-zone automatic climate control and the slim Volvo-style center console. Despite the easy-entry function for easier access to the back two seats, they have little legroom.

The urban pulse of the car

The little Volvo definitely finds its way better in the city crowd than its bigger brothers, as it measures just under four meters in length. Due to the smaller trunk, it is definitely more suitable for trips around the city than for longer trips, especially if you like to take more luggage with you. The test car was equipped with a hard luggage compartment cover, which prevents curious passers-by from viewing its contents through the glass trunk lid. But the problem with this cover is that there is only a narrow opening for loading luggage. However, as we already said in the introduction, modern individualists hate a huge amount of luggage that limits their freedom, so they travel only with hand luggage and a gold credit card.

Parent friendly

Would you recommend the Volvo C30 as a good buy for families with babies? Yes, if the family garage houses any of the station wagons or MPVs and the C30 is just Dad's (or Mom's) toy. Otherwise, no, because it will be difficult to fit all the baby's equipment in it - unless your parents trust you with how you used to travel when you had a baby at home. ISOFIX anchorages for child seats are of course available and the safety elements are as befits a Volvo, so your little one will definitely be safe.

We noticed

At Volvo, the Summum equipment package is considered the highest level of equipment. But we can also add a few pieces of equipment to the summum, and in this case the Powershift automatic transmission, the R-design package, a high-quality High Performance audio system, an anti-theft alarm, a luggage compartment cover and parking sensors were on the list of additional equipment. We connected the digital music player to the built-in AUX IN socket, which was hidden in the central drawer, which also served as an armrest. We missed the drink racks, which are usually reserved for space in the center console. Handling both the cruise control, which proved to be very useful during a long drive on the highway, and the trip computer did not seem to us the most fortunate. More practical was the 6-speed automatic transmission, which shifted smoothly and almost imperceptibly. Otherwise, driving the test Volvo was a pleasure for us, regardless of whether we were driving along the highway, winding along a country road, or parked on the side in the hustle and bustle of the city. Finally, we should mention that the C30 is equipped with five different gasoline (from 74 to 169 kW), three diesel (from 80 to 132 kW) and "flexifuel" engines.
