Cirkelbroen – the circular bridge in the Danish capital was inspired by ships

The Cirkelbroen bridge is a real revitalization for the Danish capital.

In the Danish capital, Copenhagen, in the Christiansbro district, a newly built bridge for pedestrians and cyclists Cirkelbroen, or the so-called circular bridge, was recently opened, under which the famous Icelandic architect Olafur Eliasson signed. It is reminiscent of ships, as each of the five circular platforms has its own mast, which is a metaphor for river traffic, which here is almost as dense as bicycle traffic.

Cirkelbroen is new circular bridge in the Christiansbro harbor quarter of the Danish capital, Copenhagen. The inspiration for him is the author Olafur Eliasson drawn from the ships, therefore from each of the five different sized platforms a mast is growing, clinging to the 40-meter bridge with steel wires (there are 110 of them in total), while the red fences made of modeled posts give added value LED lights, which are synchronized with city lighting. The bridge was financed by a foundation Nordea Fonden, but it is actually about drawbridge, as the middle part has a mechanism that allows ships to pass.

The circular bridge Cirkelbroen hides an interesting story behind its shape.
The circular bridge Cirkelbroen hides an interesting story behind its shape.

Circular the shape is no accident, and the idea goes back to the childhood of Eliasson, the son of a sailor, who spent a large part of it in the port of Hafnarfjördur in Iceland. They were there fishing boats tilted like sardines and was able to cross the bay by jumping from one deck to another. They were different from each other. These he poured the memories into the plan for the bridge, which will cross it daily around five thousand pedestrians and (mainly) cyclists.

The bridge is not level because the circles of different sizes are held in different places and it is extraordinary near the surface. By doing so, they "force" people to do so a little they slow down, may even stop, and Eliasson hopes it will too meeting place, while the Nordea Fonden Foundation, which has already handed over the bridge to the city, adds that they not only got the bridge and artwork, but also a new venue.
