Did you know that taking a picture of the Eiffel Tower at night is a crime and you can be fined for posting it on social media? You can only photograph the Eiffel Tower at night if you obtain permission in advance from the operator (Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel). Why? Because the illumination of the tower or the night light scenography is defined as a work of art and as such protected by copyright, which means that according to the European Union's copyright regulation, the permission of the artist or in this case the controller. What about taking pictures during the day? How is it with photographing sights in Slovenia?

Have you ever visited Paris and taken photos Eiffel Tower, one of the main and the most photographed Parisian and world landmarks? Then you have most likely broken the law! It is the Eiffel Tower photography is prohibited at night, as the illuminated tower is defined as a work of art and is therefore intellectual property, which, as we know, is no joke and cannot be freely disposed of around Prešeren. In such a case, the European Union copyright regulation requires us to reproduce images obtaining permission from the artist or in the relevant case of the controller – Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, otherwise we are in conflict with the law. The exception is photographing the Eiffel Tower during the day, as the tower then falls under public good.

So if you are going to photograph the Eiffel Tower at night and brag about it on a social network, don't be surprised if you get a misdemeanor at the door, unless of course you are obtain the operator's permission in advance of the Eiffel Tower.

In the EU directive on copyright and related rights in the information society, which dates back to 2001, we read that architectural works in public places takes photos free of charge, but this clause is not binding. France is not the only European country that has not introduced this exception into the legal order, they are also among them Italy, Belgium and Denmark. They are protected by copyright, among other things the statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, the building of the European Parliament in Strasbourg and the pyramid of the Louvre Museum. Certain restrictions also apply to the Roman Colosseum. How about taking pictures of landmarks and public buildings in Slovenia? You can take photos of them at any time of the day without permission, but you must not sell these photos.
