LJFW 2016: Fashion designer Matic Veler

I grew up in a creative environment where both my father and grandfather are tailors. I completed my undergraduate studies in textile and clothing design at the Faculty of Science and Technology. In my design approach, I like to interweave tradition with modern technology. I am no stranger to laser cut, bold forms and interweaving of different materials. I have already presented my works at numerous exhibitions at home and abroad and have received recognition for special achievements from the University of Ljubljana. In September 2016, I start studying women's fashion at the Royal College of Art in London, where I have been accepted for a master's degree.

What does a presentation at LJFW mean to a designer?
I often ask myself this question. This is certainly important, especially for younger people who want Slovenia to get to know them and gain different experiences. But you soon realize that it is often just a professionally performed, but only "one-night show". In Slovenia, unfortunately, we quickly finish listing designers who make a living from their clients. We forget that there is a whole world beyond our borders. Fear? I'm probably not the only one who wonders why fashion magazines (for the first row and "hashtags"?!). I think mainly in the direction of creating a collection in which some pieces are suitable for a portfolio, and the other pieces are as wearable as possible, so that they sell quickly and return the investment. Two birds with one stone. At the moment, I am not thinking about larger, sales editions, as I first want to gain experience by studying and working abroad. Perhaps it is up to us, younger designers, to bring customers to Slovenia and start thinking about how to improve things in this direction.

Inspiration, an idea for the autumn-winter 2016 collection?
The question of what really counts in life leads me to search for symbols for the chosen values, which I try to transfer to clothes. The collection is becoming more and more wearable, simple, from complicated pieces.

The title of the collection?

What is important to me!

How many times at fashion weeks?
I have presented myself at the Ljubljana Fashion Week several times, several times as part of the NTF student magazine, twice as part of a team, with the Young@Squat collective, and last year I presented an independent collection for the first time.
