13 modern westerns that fans of the Wild West must watch

wild west. The sun is beating down, the arid landscape flickers on the horizon and revenge is in the air. The sound of hooves is heard. The first shots are fired. The atmosphere is becoming tense, murderously hot, wild. Horses neigh and men charge with rifles. That's right. Westerns are full of action, dangerous passion and unforgettable legends. We present to you the best of the modern.

Unforgiven (1992)

In 1992, the extraordinary Clint Eastwood directed one of the best westerns of all time, in which he, along with Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris, play retired gunmen who, with a desire for revenge, go on their last mission.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Brokeback Mountain contains some classic Western elements such as an evil landlord, revenge, as well as latent homosexuality. The wonderful film by Taiwanese director Ang Lee tells the story of two men who go to Brokeback Mountain to trap sheep. Between them, a special love bond is formed out of friendship, which is forbidden for them in the real world.

No Country For Old Men (2007)

The film of the Coen brothers is a great modern Western, in which a strange thief with a strange hairstyle will drive our brains to the bone. No Room for Old Men is a film that could easily be placed alongside the westerns of great legends such as John Ford and Sergio Leone. In it, Javier Bardem plays his role more than perfectly as the cold-blooded killer Chigurh, Josh Brolin as an ordinary man Moss, who discovers corpses and a suitcase full of money during the hunt, and Tommy Lee Jones as the fearless local sheriff Ed.

Dancing with Wolves (1990)

In 1990, Kevin Costner proved himself as an excellent director and lead actor with the film Dances with Wolves, and he won seven Oscars for the film. As a hero of the American Civil War, Lieutenant John Dunbar (Costner) is sent to a new post in an abandoned fort on the western frontier, where he befriends a wolf and a tribe of Indians. He slowly becomes part of nature and the tribe, but when the army comes back for him, John is faced with a fatal dilemma.

The Proposition (2005)

Based on a screenplay by Nick Cavo, in 2005 John Hillcoat created a chilling film narrative about a police officer, Captain (Ray Winstone), who offers brothers Charlie (Guy Pearce) and Mikey (Richard Wilson) a bargain - Charlie must track down and kill their older brother Arthur, or he will , Mikey, passed away.

Rango (2011)

Rango is also an Oscar winner, but animated. The director of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Gore Verbinski, once again collaborated with the fantastic Johnny Depp, who lent his voice to the chameleon Rango, who, due to a combination of circumstances, has to exchange a comfortable terrarium for the dangerous wilderness of the American Wild West.

El Mariachi (1992)

The low-budget modern western is set in a small town on the edge of the Mexican border, and if we mention that the film was directed by Robert Rodriguez, who is good at bloody "westerns", everything is clear. In the first part of Rodriguez's trilogy about the legendary Mariachi, Carlos Gallado aka El Mariachi is mistaken for an assassin and must hide from a gang that wants to kill him. The film was followed by two sequels – Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

Django Unchained (2012)

Quentin Tarantino excels in directing crime thrillers, but he has also proven himself in a slightly different direction - westerns. With the help of a German bounty hunter (Christopher Waltz), freed slave Django (Jamie Foxx) sets out to rescue his wife, who is in the hands of the deadly plantation owner Calvino (Leonardo DiCaprio). In the end, Tarantino even enjoyed making his first western so much that he has another one to follow this year - we can expect The Hateful Eight at the end of the year.

Clash in the West (Open Range; 2003)

Kevin Costner has created another western. This time, too, he excelled in the role of director, and in the film in the role of Charley Waite, who wants to escape from his past together with Boss (Robert Duvall), Button (Diego Luna) and Mose (Abraham Benrubi). They find peace in the Wild West, but in one of the cities where bullying and violence reign, their lives change completely.

How Jesse James was killed by the coward Robert Ford (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Cowards Robert Ford; 2007)
Although quite long, Andrew Dominic's film is a great treat for western fans. Brad Pitt plays Jesse James, one of the most notorious but popular American criminals, as he was considered a kind of Robin Hood who robbed banks and trains with his gang. Robert Ford (Casey Affleck), who has admired James since childhood, tries in every way to become a member of the gang, but he prefers to make an agreement with the sheriff to kill the famous criminal and gain fame at this expense.

The Homesman (2014)

Tommy Lee Jones has a face that looks like it was carved out of Texas stone, so he's also perfect for westerns. In the film The Homesman, which he also directed, he plays George Briggs, who along with Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank) transports three mentally ill women across the Midwest.

Machete (2010)

Robert Rodriguez deserves another mention for creating one of the best modern B-rated Westerns. Danny Trejo is a former Mexican Machete agent who must kill a senator but finds himself in a trap he can barely survive. Revenge is born in him and soon he finds himself in a wild and stressful showdown.
