In the colder months, it is recommended, among other things, not to wait too long to charge the electric vehicle, to warm it up while it is still connected to electricity, and not to drive off too fast. Well, these are just some of the tips we present in this write-up!
Low temperatures, which are usually a constant on winter days, can reduce the efficiency of batteries in electric cars and thus their range. A few simple tips from Goodyear's experts can help you increase the range of your electric companion during the cold months.
The battery of an electric car should not be discharged below 20 percent
Do not delay charging your electric vehicle until the last moment, as you will need more time for the latter in winter. Instead, make sure the battery charge doesn't drop below 20 percent. Also, in colder conditions, an electric car uses some of the battery to warm up before starting to drive. Therefore, it is recommended to charge at night and, if possible, to park in a garage so that the vehicle is not exposed to extreme cold.
Take care of the heating while the car is still charging
You can save energy even before you leave home. If your electric vehicle is still charging before you leave, start by defrosting the windows and heating the vehicle while it is still plugged in, as this will not use battery power and leave more for you to drive. You can do this from the comfort of your warm home with the help of an application on your phone.
Drive slowly
Although one of the most attractive advantages of driving an electric car is the instant acceleration, avoid this during the cold months, as the battery drains faster when starting quickly. In addition, this will also ensure safer driving, as the road surface is often slippery, especially in winter, which requires greater caution.
Choose the right tires
You also contribute to a longer vehicle range by choosing the right tires. Among the latter is the Goodyear family of winter tires UltraGrip, which is suitable for all types of electric vehicles. In addition to providing good grip, more efficient braking and excellent mileage potential, they also help to reduce energy consumption in winter conditions with low rolling resistance. The newest tire UltraGrip Performance+ thus contributing to energy savings with low rolling resistance, which earned the % a score of 99.6 in a recent Auto Express test.
Maintain proper tire pressure
On cold days, the pressure in the tires decreases slightly, which affects the greater rolling resistance and, consequently, the lower performance of electric vehicles. Therefore, it is necessary to check the condition of the tires more often and make sure that they are properly inflated, as this helps to achieve the optimal range of the vehicle. At the same time, the correct inflation pressure is important for reliable driving - tires offer optimal performance and good grip only if they are properly inflated.
