8 Books We Must Read Before They Become Movies

While comparing the movie and the book and its cinematic adaptation, it can often lead to rage and tears. And even that doesn't stop us from reading the novel first before it hits the big screen. We've picked out eight books we need to read before we can see their big screen adaptations in the coming year.

1. Chris Kyle, American Sniper (January 16, 2015, USA)

Chris Kyle, known as the deadliest sniper in the history of the US military, presents fascinating and terrifying stories in the book. His book was a huge hit when it was published in 2012 and immediately attracted the attention of some Hollywood producers. The upcoming adaptation from the hands of Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper in the lead role is already a potential Oscar candidate, especially Bradley Cooper.

2. Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice (January 9, 2015, USA)

Paul Thomas Anderson decided to adapt Pynchon's 2009 noir about an unconventional private eye and the unusual case the main character finds himself in when his ex-girlfriend asks for help. The book, which smells like psychedelic from the sixties of the last century, is also the first Pynchon book that found its way to the cinema. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Katherine Waterston, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro and Owen Wilson also star.

3. Nathaniel Philbrick, In The Heart of the Sea (March 13, 2015, USA)

Based on a true story, the award-winning book tells the tragic story of the Whaleship Essex, which sank after being attacked by a bowhead whale in 1820. You can read what happened to the survivors in the book and next year you can see it in Ron Howard's film, which boasts an impressive cast: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson. The trailer already hints at a great epic adventure.

4. Tom Rob Smith, Child 44 (April 17, 2015, USA)

In one of the most recognized thrillers of recent years, a novel from 2008, the author managed to combine the languid literature and a sad view of the Soviet era of crime. It centers on a disgraced MGB agent who investigates a gruesome series of child murders. The film comes from the hands of the Swedish director Daniel Espinosa, who already impressed with the film Easy Money, and then with the thriller Safe House with Denzel Washington in the lead role. The cast is led by Tom Hardy with support from Gary Oldman, Naomi Rapace, Paddy Considine, Dev Patel and Charles Dance.

5. Andy Weir, The Martian (November 25, 2015, USA)

The book, which was first published by a self-published company in 2012, was soon purchased for reissue this year. Andy Weir tells the thrilling story of an astronaut stranded on Mars. The survival story has deservedly attracted arguably the most impressive cast of the year: Matt Damon takes the lead, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover, Kate Mara and Sean Bean also star. The icing on the cake? Director Ridley Scott.

6. Gillian Flynn, Dark Places

The author of Gone Girl has another film adaptation on the way. This is another thriller with a twist where a woman struggles to get over the brutal murder of her family. The secret society wants him to revisit the crime scene to find out what really happened. The story doesn't get as much attention as Gone Girl, but it's still dark and interesting enough to grab us. It will be brought to the big screen by a great cast: Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christina Hendricks, Nicholas Hoult and Corey Stoll.

7. Shusaku Endô, Silence

The news that this is a new project from director Martin Scorsese is enough to make us pay attention. He is said to have the drama Silence in the literary base for his next film. This is based on the acclaimed book about a Jesuit missionary who suffers persecution and violence as he tries to spread the word of Christianity in 17th century Japan. It sounds like a real challenge, but the combination of Scorsese and a cast that includes Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver only points to success.

8. Patricia Highsmith, The Price of Salt, aka Carol

Patricia Highsmith provided a mountain of material for film adaptations, culminating in Hitchcock's masterpiece Strangers on a Train in 1951 and Minghello's masterpiece Talented Mr Ripley in 1999. The film Carol is based on The Price of Salt, a 1952 novel which appears to inspired by Nabokov's Lolita. It follows a love affair between a young woman trapped at her workplace in a department store and the suburban housewife who frees her. Director Todd Haynes took Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara under his wing.
