Adidas Tokyo: Sneakers So “in” That J-Law, Kendall, and Emma Love Them

Minimalism, retro charm and a pinch of stardust

Samba walked so Tokyo could run. Literally. If you're looking for the fastest fashion transition into summer 2025, then these sneakers are your golden key.

Adidas Tokyo – originally created for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964 – are now a sleek reincarnation of a minimalist athletic aesthetic. A leather upper, suede “T‑toe” toe cap, thin rubber sole and crisscross heel create a silhouette that screams: “I’m sporty, I’m retro, I’m fashionable.”

And here they are again – straight from the Adidas archives into the collection Originals. And straight into the closets of the stars.

Jennifer Lawrence: fashion courier of the summer trend

J-Law wears them with the ease that only an Oscar-winning New Yorker can. She was spotted in a white and red striped ensemble—her favorite color choice—with both slip skirts and wide-leg pants. The combination is a winner: simple, yet star-studded.

Emma Chamberlain: pink and ready for close-up

Emma Chamberlain took to Instagram in a bubblegum pink version. Outfit? Just a ribbed long-sleeved top and blue shorts. Result? Coolness factor 1000.

Kendall Jenner: from the airport to the tennis courts

Kendall chose them for a comfortable airline look and then took them on a tennis date with a little Chalamet and a lot of fashion. Her choice: white with black stripes.

Why does Tokyo work?

The slim, retro silhouette is the answer to the oversaturation of chunky New Balance-esque shoes. Samba made them, and Tokyo is leading them. “In 2024, Adidas sneaker sales jumped 50%, thanks largely to slimmer models that are extremely popular with women,” says Rachel Makar of StockX.

Color palette: minimalist or maximal

  • Best selling: black with white stripes
  • Jennifer's choice: white with red
  • For the brave: yellow with black – for those who are not afraid of being noticed

In the summer of 2025, colors scream. And Tokyo is that subtle megaphone that doesn't bother the ears, but caresses the eyes.

Ballet-core meets sneakers

With their rounded toe, simple design, and sleek profile, Tokyo sneakers are a great alternative to ballet flats. “They’re universally flattering and go beautifully with everything—jeans, leggings, dresses, skirts,” says Makar.

Combinations that (remain)

  • For the day: slip skirt + cardigan + Tokyo = relaxed elegance
  • For the office: boyfriend blazer + wide-leg pants + Tokyo
  • For brunch: mini skirt + white shirt + coffee in hand

Archival is the new modern

Adidas proves that browsing through fashion history is the best trick: after the Samba, Gazelle, Spezial and SL 72, the Tokyo is now the icing on the cake of the retro fairytale.

Summary: Why you need Tokyo

If you want sneakers that are fresh, fashionable, comfortable and backed by a star stamp – then Tokyo is your “It” piece of the summer. Wear them once and the question will no longer be “Do you have them?” but “How many colors do you have?”
