AALTO AND SLOVENIANS
Between the wars, the tradition of wicker seating furniture made from bent beech sticks and wicker or willow continued in Slovenia. Niko Kralj gained the most recognition with his designs for the Chair in Kamnik. Our designers sought inspiration mainly from modern Scandinavian furniture. In Arhitekto, for example, in 1952, they could read Alvar Aalto's description of how he and his wife Aina developed frames made of bent laminated wood.
Seating furniture made of bent wood and metal is still relevant today: on the manufacturing side, due to the economical use of materials, suitability for mass production, lightness, stability, durability, natural flexibility; on the side of use, due to its cheapness, practicality (loading and collapsible versions) and extremely elegant with simple thin frames (overhanging versions give the impression of floating in the air).
