While on vacation in the exotic Maldives, Taiwanese photographer Will Ho came across a stunning sight. The sandy beach on which he was walking turned for a short time into a sky full of stars.
The beach was covered by several million of bioluminescent phytoplankton, which glows blue in the dark. These microscopic organisms glow in a similar way to fireflies, but the interesting thing is that under stress, i.e. in the case of stronger waves, they glow weaker. And although it is a phenomenon and chemical mechanisms that have been known for a long time, biologists are only now discovering the reasons for it.
