Movies about superheroes have become more popular than ever, we have seen many biographical and family stories, there has been a flourishing of until recently underrepresented or marginalized genres, based on movements against racism and sexism (e.g. #Oscarssowhite, #Metoo, #Timesup) and significant changes have also occurred in the film industry. Black Swan (2010)


The film is a psychological horror film about the fight between two ballerinas for the lead role in Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake. The role requires an actress who will be able to play an innocent white swan and a black swan at the same time. The innocent side of the character is better suited by the devoted dancer Nina, and the dark side by the new dancer Lily. Nina finds herself under tremendous pressure from the competition and begins to lose her sense of reality.

A romantic comedy

Bridesmaids (2011)


One of the first comedies with exclusively female main characters, which paved the way for many other comedies with female protagonists. The script was written by Amy Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, who plays the bride's best friend in the film. The film portrays female friendship and the sense of aimlessness in life in a comical way that we can all relate to, both women and men. The film proved that female-led films can be incredibly funny and high-grossing.

A science fiction film

The Avengers (2012)


The first in the Avengers film series where popular superheroes such as Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Black Widow team up to fight evil. Based on the film's huge success, three more sequels and other tie-in Marvel movies were made. Critics praised Joss Wheedon's direction and screenplay, visual effects, action sequences and actors, the film received numerous awards and nominations (including Oscars and Baftas) and broke numerous box office records.

Comedy drama

Wolf of Wall Street (2013)


A biographical film about Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker who made his fortune on Wall Street through corruption and fraud. The film is based on Belfort's autobiography of the same name, and the story is presented in a witty and exciting manner directed by Martin Scorsese. Leonardo DiCaprio shines in the main role, and our Katarina Čas also appears in it. The film was widely praised and nominated for many awards, including Oscars for director, lead actor and best film. In any case, the film is distinguished by an excellent cast and a story that will not leave you indifferent.

Animated musical fantasy

Frozen (2013)


Certainly one of the most popular animated films of the decade, which was enjoyed by both children and adults. The story is about a fearless princess who goes on an adventure together with an ice delivery man, a lively snowman and a deer to find her sister. Princess Elsa was lent her voice by Idina Menzel, who also sang the most famous song of the film - Let it go, which we could hear at every turn for a while. Frozen is the best-selling animated film of all time and was awarded two Oscars.

Boyhood (2014)


A film about a boy growing up, which was filmed for 12 years! Director Richard Linklater, together with the main actor Ellar Coltrane, shot the film every year between 2001 and 2013, in order to make the story as realistic as possible. We follow the main character, Mason, from the age of 6 to 18 in Texas, where he lives with his divorced parents. The parents are played by Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. The film is an original depiction of growing up with fleeting glimpses from everyday life, which together make up a unique cinematic work of art.

The Revenant (2015)


The story of the conquest of the American wilderness shows a group of hunters led by Hugh on the run from an Indian tribe. On the way, Hugh is attacked by a bear, and then betrayed by his assistant John, who kills his son and leaves Hugh to die in the cold, but Hugh is not ready to surrender to death without a fight.

Independent drama

Moonlight (2016)


Another coming-of-age story based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's semi-autobiographical In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. The film presents three periods in the life of the main character Chiron - childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Chiron's confrontation with his homosexuality and his own identity, which is shattered due to physical and emotional abuse growing up, is highlighted. It is the first film with a black cast and the first LGBTQ film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Musical comedy drama

La la land (La la land, 2016)


The film is a modern interpretation of the Hollywood musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. It is a romantic story of two artists trying to make it in Hollywood. The author of the script and director is Damien Chazelle, who not only serves us with exceptional singing and dancing points, but also with a visually pleasing film with colorful scenes and costumes. He was nominated for and won seven Golden Globes, a new record, and is also the recipient of numerous other awards (including Oscars).

A horror movie

Run away! (Get Out, 2017)


Run away! definitely not a typical horror movie. The debut of director Jordan Peele is a satire that opens up the issue of racism in America in a new and interesting way. It highlights the frequent appropriation of black life by whites and the simultaneous denial of black people's right to exist. The film is full of tense and fun moments that effectively present the main idea. According to film critic Roger Ebert, the film enables white people to see the situation also from the perspective of black people and thereby feel empathy for their situation.

Romantic drama

Call Me by Your Name (2017)


The film is based on André Aciman's novel of the same name and is the last in Luca Guadagnino's Lust trilogy, which also includes I Am Love (2009) and A Bigger Splash (2015). It is a romantic story between 17-year-old Elio, the son of an archeology professor, and 24-year-old Oliver, his father's student, in the 1980s, which takes place in northern Italy. The film is an excellent display of love and lust between the main characters, which are however limited by the time and conditions in which they live. If you don't fall in love with the film because of the story, you will definitely be captivated by its beauty.

Roma (2018)


A semi-autobiographical film about growing up by Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón, set between 1970 and 1971 in Colonia Roma, a district of Ciudad de México. The official premiere of the film was at the Venice Film Festival, after which it was released on Netflix. It is an extremely realistic account of the life of the maid Cleo, which evokes empathy regardless of social or cultural differences. The film won many awards, including being the first foreign-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Director.

Marriage Story (2019)


After years of marriage, Brooklyn-based director Charlie and actress Nicole decide to divorce, which starts amicably, but soon turns into a legal battle between their lawyers, who drag their son Henry into it. A touching story about marriage, divorce and family.
