Is Cake for Jennifer Aniston what Monster was for Charliz Theron? With the role of a torn woman, Aniston flirts strongly with Oscar. She is otherwise used to greasy press because of private stories, but this time she is dealing with a different kind of "fat". The greasiness of her hair, as her character is a considerable departure from what we are used to with her. Glamor and make-up are replaced by scars and dark circles. Shocking.
Cake is a dark story (with rays of hope) about a woman, an addict, who struggles with chronic pain, which he soothes with cocktails of pills and washes them down with alcohol, which has romance with a widower (Sam Worthington, which we know from Avatar) and imaginary friendship with his late wife (Anna Kendrick, which we will soon see again in the sequel to Pitch Perfect).

A film steeped in suffering from both worlds, physical and mental, it certainly is festival material, a Oscar was not mentioned in this mix until recently. However, the trailer is proof enough that Aniston, 45, who said the role was simply meant to be hers, deserves more than just the role of silent favorite for golden statuette for the leading female role.
