Kranj, town of France Prešeren

From Ljubljana, drive along the Gorenje highway and very soon turn off the highway - at the second exit for Kranj. Kranj is the largest city in the Gorenjska region and the fourth most populous city in Slovenia.

Its old town rises like a pier steeply above the confluence of rivers Kokre and Sava, and the surrounding area offers us a beautiful walk along the natural attractions nearby. So let's park the car in the city center and set off on foot to discover. Let's head towards the old part of town, which is only open to pedestrians, and first, without hesitation, turn into the Mlečna restaurant, which has been a meeting point for the people of Kranj for many years. Thus, we can enjoy their varied offer: from abundant breakfasts, sweet delicacies, to warm snacks, as well as an idyllic view of the recently renovated Maistro square and the lively happenings there. The pulse of the street invites us to discover the old part of town in more detail, so we head further along the cobbled street until we see Prešeren's house on the right. France Prešeren lived in the house from the late autumn of 1846 until his death, and now it houses a memorial museum with an authentically furnished bedroom of the poet and a lawyer's office, as well as a gallery where exhibitions related to the poet's life are held on the anniversaries of the poet's birthday and death. , works and his name. A few steps further is the Gorenjski Museum or The Town Hall Gallery, where you can see the permanent archaeological exhibition and other visiting exhibitions. Recently, Klavdij Tutta, one of the most independent and original Slovenian painters, who currently works and lives in Kranj, was a guest in it. On the occasion of Abraham's celebration and 30 years of creative activity in the field of art, the Municipality of Kranj supported a "bouquet" of his exhibitions, where the artist uses various media for his expression. They can be seen at several points in Kranj, but for detailed information about the locations, it is best to contact the Gorenjski Museum, which prepared this project together with the artist.

City pulse
But the pulse of the city draws us further along the main street, past the church to Prešeren's theater in Kranj, where a happy atmosphere awaits us on the well-kept ice rink in front of it. Here you can test your skating skills every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., so don't forget to bring your skates and warm accessories. If you would like even more cultural spectrum, let's take a look at the monthly announcement of theater performances and by purchasing a ticket in advance secure your seat at the viewing of Partljič's comedy about unusual mutual entanglements entitled Partnerski odnosi, which will be presented in March. The theater box office is open from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and one hour before the start of performances, and we will charge from 9 to 17 euros for the ticket. In front of the entrance to the building, a large monument to F. Prešeren greets us and directs us to the parallel street behind the theater, where a few steps towards the Kranjske most, an open city market hides in its colorful clothing, so let's fill our basket with fresh fruit and vegetables, give ourselves a bouquet of freshly picked flowers and let's continue towards Tavčarjeva Street. A walk along it allows us to visit interesting shops where we can buy fresh tea, choose our favorite perfume, view the range of antique products and stop in front of the house of the renowned Slovenian publicist Janez Bleiweis, and finally turn into one of the most pleasant cafes - Cukrarno. The colorfulness of the modernly furnished ambience and the possibility of admiring nature and the Kokra river on their heated terrace are attributes that attract many visitors. And so do we! Daily fresh desserts and tempting drinks ensure that our satisfaction is intensified.

Free along Prešeren
And the afternoon sun is already here, and there are still many hints for getting through the day. Don't let our adventure end without visiting Carniola's natural attractions − of the Kokra canyon. It can be seen along the circular walking path that starts at the Carniola Bridge. The route is undemanding, suitable for all nature lovers, and we can also be guided along it by a trained guide who will tell us much more about this natural attraction, so it is best to arrange a guide with the tourism office in Kranj. Also, don't forget to visit the Prešeren Grove, which was created from the converted Kranj cemetery. But that's not all, because we haven't seen Kiselštajn Castle and Plečnik's arcades and the fountain in the old town. There is a lot of everything, far too much for one day, so let's roll the dice and decide on one of the options that this rich city has to offer, and then slowly "depart" towards home.
