Festive concert on the 110th anniversary of the birth of the composer and academician Lucijan Marija Škerjanc
Wednesday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m., in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Ljubljana
We will honor the composer's high jubilee with a performance of his SLOVAK MASSES for baritone solo and double string quartet, which he created in 1940. The performance of the mass itself was met with favorable comments by the critics, emphasizing its concertantes and general spiritual significance. This masterpiece, which is the only mass work in the master's rich oeuvre, probably means Škerjanc's creative encounter with eternal themes and God in the light of the flaming start of the Second World War.
This time's performance, with excellent musicians of the young Slovenian generation, bassist Janko Volčanšek, organist Andraž Slakan and the Chamber Orchestra of the House of Culture Celje under the direction of Simon Dvoršak, has a symbolic meaning on the occasion of the great jubilee of the composer, who is too often forgotten by today's professional public.
Lucijan Marija Škerjanc (1900 -1973) is the central figure of that meritorious generation of Slovenian composers, who, with his works and teaching activities, founded professional impeccable musical creation in our country. He was a musician with broad views, educated in Ljubljana, Prague, Vienna, Paris and Basel, and his work was multifaceted: composer, pedagogue, as such for many years professor of composition at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana and for some time its rector, pianist , conductor, music writer and administrator of the Slovenian Philharmonic.
The event is organized in cooperation with the House of Culture of Celje and the LM Škerjanc Foundation, with the patronage of the Municipality of Celje and with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.
