The young American photographer Kiyun created a series of photographs of young people who clearly show through their experiences that they encounter racism every day.
Kiyun photographed Fordham University students holding signs in front of them with words, phrases and questions that they have or often hear. Concrete examples of social aggression and how individuals experience them in the photos below:
"You don't speak Spanish?"
Just because I'm Mexican doesn't mean I'm the first choice to play Dora the Explorer in a high school play.
"No, you're white."
When people think it's weird because I listen to Carrie Underwood.
"Courtney, I never looked at you as a black girl." #Oopen your eyes.
"What are you?". MAN. Coming from a multiracial family doesn't make you ANYTHING.
"Where do you REALLY come from?"
"How does your hair look today?" she said pulling the cap off my head WITHOUT MY PERMISSION.
"So you're Chinese, right?"
When I stand next to my mother. "Why is your daughter so white?"
”Do you see as much as white people? You know, because of your eyes…”
"You are very beautiful. For a black girl.”
"You're not acting normal for a black person, you know that?"
