The modern Karst house, designed by Dekleva Gregorič architects, is an excellent example of a modern interpretation of traditional Slovenian construction here.
The Karst region was once covered with mighty oaks, but the Venetians cut them down and used them for pilings supporting Venice. Thus, the Karst remained bare and exposed to the strong wind. For this reason, traditional karst houses are small, compact, have small openings and are lined with rough stone.
When designing the building, they Dekleva Gregorič architects kept all these features of karst architecture and created a house that is a perfect combination of modern interior and traditional exterior. The building combines modern construction technology with the best elements of tradition and proves that even seemingly simple architecture can still be alive. They kept the small volume, the stone facade and the slope of the roof, but inside the building is completely flexible.
The space of the building is broken up by wooden volumes, in which the bathroom and kitchen with dining room are located on the ground floor, and the bedrooms on the upper floor. The space between the bedrooms is intended for children's play and later also for work. All large openings are located in the ground floor part, which is intended for living, and open to wonderful typical karst views. The materials used are natural, unobtrusive and pleasant, as is the color scheme of the building. The space is enriched by interesting design solutions, such as a staircase that also serves as a bookcase.
