The film is an uncompromising western set two years before the American Civil War, and its central character is the slave Django. His brutal past with his former owners leads him to meet German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz, who is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers. The eccentric Schultz hires Django with the promise of freeing him when they capture the Brittles. After success, Schultz frees him, but the two men decide not to go their separate ways, they decide to follow the most wanted criminals of the South. Django has honed key hunting skills, but he has only one goal in front of him: to find and rescue his wife, who he lost many years ago to the slave trade. Their search eventually leads them to Calvin Candie, the owner of a notorious slave plantation. They investigate the land under a pretext, but arouse suspicion in the house slave, who enjoys the complete trust of the owner. Their moves are noticed and they are forced to choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival.
