Does your washing machine smell like a musty basement? This trick will save you from a high repair bill

The washing machine is supposed to be a symbol of cleanliness, freshness and soft, washed towels that could be served to a queen without shame. But the reality? Sometimes it gives off a smell that is more reminiscent of an abandoned basement in a vampire horror movie than a Swiss wellness resort. Even though you've just done your laundry, the bathroom is filled with the aroma of stagnant water, musty textiles and a subtle note of "something is wrong".

You don't have to accept this and live in the belief that this is what technological progress smells like. The culprit for this unpleasant smell is not broken washing machine, but accumulation moisture, detergent residue, and other microscopic nuisances. The good news? The solution is simple, affordable, and surprisingly effective—and it doesn't involve expensive chemicals or a call to a repairman. Get some vinegar, baking soda, and some good will ready—your machine (and nose) will thank you.

Why does the washing machine stink? Get to know the small culprits with a big impact

When odors appear in a washing machine, it's usually the result of a neat mix of:

  • moisture remaining after washing,
  • detergent and softener residues,
  • dirt, body fat (nice, right?), hair and other “contributions” from your clothes,
  • and (if you're lucky) some mold and bacteria to top it off.

Special attention should be paid to those models with front loading – a real little ecosystem likes to settle in the folds of the rubber seal around the door. Warm, humid, with plenty of organic debris – if you were bacteria, you would move there too.

And no, more detergent doesn't mean cleaner - it means more slime and more food for microorganisms. Add to that a clogged filter or a lazy drain, and you have a recipe for aromatic disaster.

Washing machine solution from grandma's arsenal: vinegar and baking soda (not at the same time, please!)

If your machine is already waging chemical warfare against freshness, it's time for the white knight vinegar and its charming ally – baking soda – to enter the game.

1. Vinegar – your disinfectant miracle in a bottle

  • Pour 2 to 4 cups (about 0.5 to 1 liter) of white vinegar into the empty drum.
  • You can also pour it into the detergent compartment – the machine won't judge you.
  • Choose the longest and hottest program (the one you only use when you spill red wine on your white tablecloth).
  • Once the machine is filled with water and started, stop it for an hour (if the model allows it) to let the vinegar play a little with the mold.

2. Baking soda – for those who prefer the smell of fresh rather than… a drum

  • After the vinegar cycle, add half a cup (approximately 100 g) of baking soda to the drum.
  • For a bonus effect and a little spa atmosphere, you can add 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
  • Then run the same hot, long cycle again.

Important warning: Don't mix vinegar and baking soda in the same cycle. Really, don't. While it's fun to watch the reaction in the lab (or kitchen), we'd rather avoid this experiment in the machine. Use them in separated phase - otherwise they will be neutralized and there will be no effect.

Additional tips that every washing machine owner should know

  • Leave the drum door open after each wash – let the machine breathe!
  • Clean the filter regularly. Yes, that little compartment at the bottom that we all dread.
  • Don't overdose on detergent – less is more.
  • Give your machine a “spa day” with vinegar and baking soda every now and then, even if it doesn’t smell. Prevention is the queen of cleanliness.

At the end of the day…

Your washing machine can be your fragrant ally or your odorous nightmare. With a little discipline (and some vinegar), you'll quickly find that the fresh smell of laundry is much nicer when it's free of the undertones of old mold. And who knows – you might even be surprised by someone's visit with a question: “What fabric softener do you use?”, and you will answer with a smile: “Just vinegar and a little effort.”
