Even with the first products, and from prehistoric times to the present day, decoration has been an important part of the object. Different types of decoration have developed over the centuries, and their common characteristics have marked periods in art.
We will begin our journey through the periods of art in the Gothic period and conclude it in the near past. Fashion and individual taste have always been reflected in objects for everyday use. Fashion changed more slowly than today, but it left a strong mark on the choice of clothes and home furnishings. The influence of fashion can be felt both in the richest pieces of clothing and equipment, that is, in those that were also a status symbol, but also in other, cheaper items that reflect it, albeit in a different, customized way.
Artisans had to be up-to-date with customer tastes and prevailing fashion trends, as handicrafts were once sold in a similar way as today. At the end of the 18th century, with the first beginnings of industrial design, decorative structures also began to change. Changing fashion trends became faster and faster, and in addition to designers, craftsmen also had to adapt to them. In the second half of the 19th century, the criticism of the products of the industrial design of the time, caused by the London World Exhibition, left a strong mark and in the previous century led to functionalism, which denied the role of decoration and prioritized utility.
Today, our world is again colorful, colorful and full of fantasy patterns. Or not, if we so choose, because taste and fashion play a different role today than they once did.
