The Bračko family - mother Sabrina, father Davor and daughters Sara and Maša - is an everyday family. In August, they returned from a one-year wandering around the world. At the time of departure, Sara was ten years old, and Maša was five. They had a one-way ticket to Malaysia in their pocket, four days worth of clothes in their backpack and a list of countries they would like to visit in their minds.

In August, you returned from a year-long trip around the world. Has the desire for this been brewing for a long time?

Davor: The idea came quite spontaneously. We always travel for a month at a time, but one day I said to Sabrina: how about we go away for a year? And she was straight to the point. We made a quick decision. There were three obstacles: our jobs, whether the two girls would agree, and whether we would raise enough money. We saved one by one and went on our way.

Around the world for a year. How much preparation is required for such a project?

Sabrina: The whole thing took us a few days at most. We made a plan for the countries we would visit. We excluded those with malaria or yellow fever, as we did not want to expose the children to it. Then we bought one-way tickets to Malaysia. At first we only planned to travel around Asia because it's cheap.

You ended up traveling in South America. How did you decide where to go next?

Davor: In each country, we made decisions on the fly, based on proximity and suitable time of year. After Malaysia, Indonesia and Nepal, we went to India. Singapore and Australia followed, and back again to Asia, the Philippines and China. Because we were surprised by the coup d'état, it was necessary to change the plan. I did some shopping around for bargain cards and asked Sara where she wanted to celebrate her birthday. She said that in Tokyo and so from there we flew to South America via New York.

One year and so many different experiences. Sara and Maša, what do you remember most?

Sara: I liked New York the most, I wanted to see it for a long time, and Nepal and Australia were also great.

Maša: But I liked it best in Australia, where we had a motor home, we cooked for ourselves, we saw kangaroos, olgi and Uluru. The funniest thing was in Borneo, when the monkeys took bread from Ati's backpack, and they stole chips from me and Sara.

Did something unpleasant happen to you on the way?

Sabrina: In our second month of travel, we were surprised by three earthquakes in Indonesia. The first one was very strong and Maša was just in the pool when water started to flow out of it. This was followed by two weaker earthquakes, but the shaking was enough and we traveled to Nepal.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by such events and said: let's go home?

Sabrina: We never sought refuge in going home. We just wanted to be away from the epicenter of the earthquake.

Where did you experience the biggest culture shock?

Davor: It was in India, where we spent ten weeks. There are very few things in India that are pleasing to the eye. You're always confused, you don't know what's waiting for you around the next corner. We also had problems with food, because they don't know how to prepare non-baking dishes, so the girls were often only on rice or fries.

Sabrina: It's also hard to travel, and here we experienced the most tiring journey, when we traveled for three days on a local bus and the girls sat motionless on a small seat, even for nine hours a day, without stopping.

You are traveling in a traveler's way. How did you adjust the trip to the family?

Sabrina: We added things to the trip that we would not have gone to see on our own, such as Disneyland. If there was something interesting for Maša and Sara, we always went to see it. For girls, animals are one of the most interesting experiences, and for them it is unforgettable, for example desert camel trekking in India.

If you look back now. What did this adventure bring you?

Davor: I think that Maša and Sara got the most from seeing how things look in the world and how privileged they are with what they have here. That they experienced that they can play, regardless of what language the child speaks or how he is dressed.

Sabrina: Maša and Sara became very attached to each other this year. As for the family, the quality of life is better when traveling, even though you have less and live in one room. You have all the time in the world there, but at home we have to steal time between all the responsibilities.

You wrote on your blog that it's time for a new trip. Where is it taking you this time?

Davor: Anywhere abroad. We are homesick for the unknown. And we have plans, but they should stay with us for once.
