Faster, bolder, wiser: Everything you need to know about Sonic the Hedgehog 4

The Blue Hedgehog is back on the big screen.

Admit it, you too sometimes have days when you would rather put on your red sneakers and run away from your daily routine and endless meetings at the speed of light. Our favorite blue alien does it professionally! The countdown has officially begun, as we are only one year away from the fourth installment of the popular Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Get your popcorn ready, because the creators promise an animated spectacle that will surpass all previous dimensions.

Stardust and voices that melt hearts

If you naively thought that animated video game movies weren't for you and were reserved only for Sunday mornings with the little ones, you might change your mind with this absolutely incredible cast. Let's be honest: a movie featuring the velvety, deep voice of Idris Elba and the inimitable Keanu Reeves is a must-see, even if it's about an animated hedgehog and his rather hyperactive furry friends.

The cast, which returns under the baton of visionary director Jeff Fowler, reads like an invite list to Hollywood's most exclusive post-Oscar party. Jim Carrey has apparently (and fortunately for us) still not tired of his brilliantly evil, epic mustache as the villain Dr. Robotnik, while Ben Schwartz will once again lend his charm to the main blue hero. But that's not all! They are joined by Kristen Bell, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, who provide the necessary, down-to-earth human counterbalance to all the special effects chaos in the film. And if that's not enough for you, there's also Ben Kingsley, Matt Berry, Nick Offerman, Richard Ayoade, Colleen O'Shaughnessey and Lee Majdoub. It seems that the production team threw every charismatic actor they could get on the phone that day into this project. And guess what? We fully support this megalomaniac decision.

Why does Hollywood love this fast guy?

We live in an age of endless movie franchises, reboots, and the recycling of ideas. Sometimes, when we hear the announcement of a fourth installment of something, we smile slightly and roll our eyes sarcastically. But the animated family adventure Sonic the Hedgehog is a phenomenon in its own right. Instead of losing its edge over the years, the franchise has become bolder, funnier, and more visually rich with each new installment.

Producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara have apparently made a secret pact with the unknown forces of cinema, as they have managed to do the seemingly impossible: make a critically and commercially successful film based on a video game, and this for the fourth time in a row. Its success lies mainly in the fact that the film does not take itself too seriously, makes us laugh until we cry, while at the same time serving us with all the subtlety warm, emotional moments about the importance of family, friendship and belonging. Ironic, right? A hyperactive blue hedgehog from another dimension teaches us about what it really means to be human.

Countdown to Spring 2027

Yes, you read that right. Although we're already itching to get to the cinemas, we'll have to wait a little longer for this epic adventure. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 hits theaters on March 18, 2027.
