Let's face it, nothing ruins a relaxing evening faster than water that just won't drain from the sink. Before you panic, call the plumber, or pour a mountain of harsh chemicals down the drain, take a deep breath.

Your kitchen already has the perfect and completely organic solution to this little disaster. It's time for some real home alchemy that works like magic and your pipes will flow flawlessly again.

Kitchen cabinet or your new beauty oasis for drains?

bicarbonate of soda is not just the miracle ingredient that saves your ruined muffins or whitens your teeth before an important date. It is the absolute star of the modern, eco-conscious household. It has exceptional disinfectant properties, successfully neutralizes those less pleasant odors (goodbye, multiplying bacteria!) and literally dissolves grease, hair, food residue and mineral deposits. If you use it regularly every few months, you will say goodbye forever to that ominous gurgling in the pipes and the painful, slow draining of water. The secret is that it cleans the pipes before they really get clogged.

The classic duo: baking soda and vinegar

This is the star couple of home cleaning – like that incredibly coordinated celebrity duo on the red carpet, except this pair actually gets the job done, and without all the tabloid drama. The process is so simple and clean that you can do it with a nourishing mask on your face and a glass of sparkling wine in hand, without any messy plumbing disassembly.

First, boil water on the stove or in the microwave. Pour a few drops of your favorite dishwashing detergent (the kind that fights grease relentlessly) into the drain and carefully pour boiling water over it. It's like a nice, hot bath that softens and dissolves stubborn dirt. Then pour a cup of baking soda down the drain. If you have a designer-style small drain, use a regular kitchen funnel – let's be elegant and avoid dusty chaos all over the sink.

Next comes the grand finale: pour in a cup of distilled white vinegar. Don't be intimidated! The dramatic fizzing sound that will immediately follow is not a cry for help, but the genuine sound of victory. The baking soda (which is basic) and the vinegar (which is mildly acidic) have just met in a passionate chemical reaction, trying to neutralize each other. This lively foaming is what will mechanically break up and wash away the clogs deep in your drain. Wait five minutes, then rinse everything thoroughly with another round of boiling water. If the drain is clogged again, rinse it with hot tap water to finish it off. If the water is still standing, simply repeat the process, as sometimes it takes at least two treatments for complete success.

Editorial advice: If you don't like the sharp smell of vinegar, elegantly replace it with lemon juice in this process. Your kitchen will instantly smell like the freshness of the summer Italian Riviera, and the effect will still be simply incredible.

Night watch: salt and baking soda for stubborn cases

Sometimes drains are like stubborn exes – they need a little more time and a much different approach. If your first attempt with vinegar didn’t work, try a luxurious overnight treatment. First, pour a cup of baking soda into the clogged drain, then add half a cup of salt. Let this magical mixture work for several hours, preferably overnight, while you get your beauty sleep and the drain is not in use.

In the morning, bring two cups of water to a boil again on the stove and simply pour it down the drain, then rinse the whole thing thoroughly with warm tap water. This method is a bit more abrasive and acts as the ultimate, rough scrub for your pipes.

Golden rules for flawless flow

Prevention is always the mother of wisdom. Why deal with disasters and potential floods when we can prevent them with minimal effort? Once a week, give your drains a quick and refreshing “spa treatment” with boiling water and a drop of detergent. If you keep an open box of baking soda in the fridge to absorb unpleasant odors, when it’s time to replace it, don’t throw the old soda in the trash – use it to flush your kitchen drains preventively!

Never, ever, pour oil or grease directly down the drain. It’s like smearing a thick layer of heavy Vaseline on your face before bed and expecting to wake up with clogged pores. Just use a paper towel and wipe away the grease from the pan. And of course, drain screens are your best friend and a must-have accessory for any sink. They catch all those tiny bits of food and hair that would otherwise create a nightmare-worthy clog over time.

But if, despite your excellent care, drains are still protesting and the water is stagnant too often, it's time to throw away those glamorous housekeeper gloves and call a professional. Sometimes a smart woman simply knows when to leave the job to the experts to prevent a burst pipe and a real water disaster in our beautifully appointed bathroom or kitchen in time.
