Forget matcha – the new Japanese obsession is called hojicha (and it's better at everything)

Have you heard of hojicha? If you've been swearing by matcha until now, it's time to get to know its roasted "relative." Hojicha, which is winning over natural beverage lovers all over the world with its delicate flavor and soothing aroma.

What is hojicha – more than just tea

Hojicha is Japanese green tea, which – in contrast to the more well-known matcha and sencho – not steamed, but roasted. This process turns the leaves and stems of the Camellia sinensis plant into a brownish mixture with a delicate, smoky aroma.

Roasting not only provides a unique aroma with hints of caramel and nuts, but also significantly reduces the caffeine content. This makes hojicha an ideal drink for evening hours or for those who want to avoid stimulants.

When hojicha combines with milk, it is formed hojicha latteUnlike matcha latte, which is more pronounced and vegetal, hojicha latte brings warm, soft notes of cocoa, smoke and nuts. It goes well with honey, vanilla or maple syrup and is delicious hot or iced.

How to make hojicha latte at home

You don't need any special tools or skills to make this drink. You can choose between two approaches: using hojicha powder or classic leaves.

Recipe with hojicha powder

Ingridients:

– 1–2 g hojicha powder
– 100 ml of warm water (approx. 80 °C)
– 200 ml milk (cow's or plant-based)
– optional: honey, maple syrup or vanilla

Preparation:

1. Put the hojicha powder in a cup and mix it with warm water into a smooth liquid.
2. Heat the milk separately and froth it.
3. Pour milk into the tea and add sweetener if desired.
4. Serve and enjoy the warm creamy softness.

Recipe with tea leaves

Ingridients:

– 1 teaspoon hojicha leaves
– 100 ml of water
– 200 ml of milk
– sweetener of choice

Preparation:

1. Pour hot water over the leaves and leave for 3–5 minutes.
2. Strain into a cup.
3. Add the frothed milk and sweeten to taste.
4. Stir lightly and enjoy.
