Alain Patel's performance goes beyond the framework of a cabaret show, even fiction in general, which is certainly the reason why Gardenia is one of the most prominent productions of the past year and a hit in European theaters. The story was conceived by actress Vanessa Van Durme, inspired by a film about the closing of a transvestite cabaret in Barcelona. She gathered a group of transsexual and transvestite friends and convinced choreographer Alain Platel and director Frank Van Laecke to create an extraordinary and unusual show together. An intimate story was created, woven from the turbulent lives of nine exciting people. Seven older actors navigating between female and male identities, one young man and one "real" woman, each of them on their own path of search, each with their own story. Sometimes funny, sometimes touching.
