A bird's eye view provides a unique view of many countries around the world. Some shapes are already true icons, such as the Italian boot. But this small Croatian island boasts a truly unique shape. The island of Baljenac (or Bavljenac) looks like a giant fingerprint from a bird's eye view. Not only do the low walls give the appearance of reefs, the oval shape of the island adds its own.
The island Baljenac, which lies near the island of Kaprije, is only half a kilometer long and completely uninhabited. Its surface measures 0.14 square kilometers, and the highest peak of the islet is only 39 meters above sea level. Nevertheless, this island is a real attraction, because it is amazingly similar to a fingerprint from a bird's eye view. That it looks like a fingerprint is to be thanked hand-built walls on the island, which were created over a long period of time and for various reasons, most often due to agriculture. The entire length of the walls is 23 kilometers and 375 meters, and it was built entirely by hand. It was built by the inhabitants the neighboring island of Kaprije, who had land in Baljenac. The men usually transported the women to the island to work on the land, while the men spent the day at sea. In the evening, the fishermen picked up the women on the island and took them home. Today's generations have lost interest in agricultural work on the island, and the island is becoming like this a home for young pine trees.
The Croatian government is currently cooperating with UNESCO, in order to include this island in the list of world heritage, where there are already 14 cultural sights of Croatia, including The 300-year-old knightly game Sinjska alka.
