Tattoos that we got done a long time ago can be regretted later. Either for aesthetic reasons or because we have changed our view of the world. This is especially felt by ex-criminals, whose tattoos, with which they express their affiliation, have a harmful effect on their lives forever. This is what photographer Steven Burton explores in his Skin Deep photo series of ex-gangsters. The series consists of portraits of ex-gangsters, tattooed all over their bodies, whose tattoos have been digitally removed. He worked on the project for two years and invested over 400 hours of retouching in Photoshop.
Tatu marks us for life. If you have accepted in the past bad decision, you may regret it later, but not like you penitents who were once gangsters and they sealed their fate with their infamous tattoos all over their bodies. The power of tattoos and ex-gangsters who are their lives on the wrong side of the law left behind, but not the tattoos they have branded for life, in a series of photographs Skin Deep the photographer studies Steven Burton.
With them, he wants to show the true side of individuals whom society, because of tattoos, which have long since ceased to be a taboo, it stigmatizes and them with theirs prejudices makes life very difficult.

The Deep Skin project had a simple concept. Burton took the photo heavily tattooed gangsters and then tattoos them digitally removed and offers both portraits for comparison.
Portraits were moved by what they saw, as most no tattoos she hadn't seen in decades. The series was in the making two years, and Burton has now released it in the form of a book, which it offers on a crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.
