Huawei Mate X2: foldable smartphone with four cameras

Huawei is trying to impress fans of "folders" with a radical overhaul

Huawei has announced the Mate X2, its first all-new foldable device since 2019 when it made the Mate X. The new phone gets a major overhaul compared to the original version, with a large display that opens inwards rather than outwards. To use the phone when folded, the Huawei Mate X2 has a second screen on the outside, similar to Samsung's Galaxy Fold series.

Since it is a Huawei device, it will Mate X2 launched without support for Google apps or services, which is likely to severely limit its appeal outside of China. According to Huawei's website, the phone will run on EMUI 11.0, which is based on Android 10. However, the company said during the live stream that it plans to make the Mate X2 among the first phones to be updated to its own operating system HarmonyOS, coming in April.

The internal display of the Mate X2 measures 8 inches with a resolution of 2480 x 2200, while the external display is 6.45 inches with a resolution of 2700 x 1160. Both are OLED and have a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. Both are also slightly larger than the 7.6-inch internal display and 6.2-inch external display found on Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 2. The phone is powered by a flagship chip inside Kirin 9000, the processor that debuted with the Mate 40 Pro last year. This is combined with 8 GB of RAM and battery with rated capacity 4,400 mAh, which can be quickly charged up to 55 W.

They are on the back of the phone four cameras: 50 MP wide-angle, 16 MP ultra-wide, 12 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom and “SuperZoom” camera with 8 MP and 10x optical zoom. The selfie camera on the outside of the phone has a resolution of 16 MP and it seems to be the only selfie camera as well.

The Mate X2 is technically the third phone in Huawei's foldable phone lineup. Last year, it released the Mate XS, an updated version of the original Mate X that featured a more durable screen and a faster Kirin 990 processor.

Huawei says the Mate X2 will be available in China with 256GB of internal storage for approximately 2,292 euros or for about 2,419 euros with 512 GB of storage space. Available colors include blue, pink, black and white. It will be available for purchase in China from February 25, but it is not yet clear when the phone will be available in Europe.
