IKEA surprises: We discovered new designer pieces that look like a million dollars

High design that we can finally afford.

We all want a home that looks like it came straight out of a magazine, but our bank account often says otherwise. What if I told you that you can put real Italian design pieces in your living room, with details made of real Carrara marble and solid oak, without breaking the bank? IKEA and renowned designer Raffaella Mangiarotti have joined forces and the result is stunning. Get ready for a lighting revolution.

How many times have you stood in a furniture store and scratched your head because that beautiful statement lamp was absolutely useless for reading your favorite book? Or bought a super functional reading light that ended up looking like something you stole from a dentist's office? Those days are over.

IKEA did what it does best – she democratized luxuryIn collaboration with a renowned Italian industrial designer Raffaello Mangiarotti presents two new floor lamps that are truly sculptural objects, created for those of us who don't want to compromise. Forget cheap plastic. We're talking about materials that make our mouths water: white Italian Carrara marble, solid oak, steel and sophisticated details in brass and nickel.

MOSSPLYM: When nature meets Milanese chic

The first of the stars of this new collection is called MOSSPLYM. And before you get tongue-tied at the pronunciation of this typically Scandinavian name, let me tell you that its shape is pure visual poetry. Imagine a slender stem made of solid oak (where you can choose between a light or dark version), standing elegantly and stably on a heavy base made of real Carrara marble. And because the marble has those beautiful, unrepeatable natural veins, each of your lamps will be a completely unique piece. None of your friends will have the same one!

On top of this beauty, a blown glass lampshade stands tall, its softly rounded shape reminiscent of a delicate flower bud. But Raffaella thought of everything – it’s not enough for a lamp to be an aesthetic extravaganza, it also has to be a smart assistant in your everyday life. That’s why she added another, smaller, adjustable lampshade on the pole for directed light. Both lamps emit that perfect, soft and romantic glow through the double-layered frosted glass, making everyone in the room look like they’ve had a full eight hours of beauty sleep and a great visit to the beautician. As the designer herself says, it was extremely important to her to combine ambient and reading light without that unaesthetic feeling that the two functions are artificially glued together. Mission accomplished, Raffaella!

TRÅDNATE: An architectural marvel for dramatic effect

If MOSSPLYM is your romantic, nature-oriented soul, TRÅDNATE is its austere yet endlessly appealing architectural sister. Its tall, striking form stems from the designer's constant dialogue with the geometry of nature and is based on two parallel structural beams.

Its composition seeks the perfect balance of opposites: one of the opaque shades is fixed upwards and ensures that your room gets that pleasant, diffused glow, while the other is attached to a rotating arm and serves as your personal lighting assistant when working on your laptop or reading in the evening. It is firmly anchored by a heavy base and elegantly finished with brass details that add the finishing touch to the whole story and a sense of real prestige.

From New York's MoMA straight to your bedroom

If your name Raffaella Mangiarotti doesn't sound familiar yet, it's high time you wrote it down in your "design" dictionary. The Milanese designer is a true rock star in the world of industrial design. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the iconic New York MoMA museum, she has received more than 40 international awards in her career, and her first collaboration with Ikea (if you remember that beautiful BÄCKNATE paper lantern in the shape of an orchid) even earned her a nomination for the prestigious Compasso d'Oro award - which in the world of industrial design means as much as winning an Oscar in Hollywood.

The best news of all? This isn't their last collaboration. IKEA and Raffaella are already working on new lighting masterpieces as part of their long-term partnership. Until then, the world will be able to see MOSSPLYM and TRÅDNATE live for the first time at the upcoming Milan Design Week 2026, specifically at the exhibition at Spazio Maiocchi, which will take place from April 21 to 26. We're still waiting to see when exactly these two beauties will hit our shelves and what their official price will be, but one thing is crystal clear: start preparing the space in your living room. Your spring shopping list just got a lot longer.
