Instagram recently hit one billion users. On this occasion, on Wednesday, June 20, the social network officially launched IGTV, which is dedicated to the publication of longer videos.
IGTV it looks like a mix between stories and traditional online platforms, as it focuses on linking between users, but it is mainly intended for mobile phones. It uses a video format that does not require turning the phone to view in full screen mode. The new feature is available as separate application, but at the same time it can be accessed with Instagram.
It is possible to switch between different videos with by scrolling the screen. When the application is turned on, the home screen will not be displayed, but the selected clip, which will automatically start playing. The videos are otherwise classified into different categories categories, such as “For You”, “Following” and “Popular”.
IGTV has also borrowed some features from YouTube and Vimeo. Instagram's new acquisition is indeed divided into channels, where it has each user his own channel. Although the platform is primarily created for phones, recordings can also be uploaded with desktops.
Videos that you can post to your Instagram wall can only be as long as they are a minute. In contrast, IGTV accepts length videos up to one hour. It will also be possible to respond to them with likes and comments.
Given the popularity of Instagram Stories, we can assume that the app will do well. If this is indeed the case, we will be able to find out in the coming weeks when IGTV will be available for devices with operating systems iOS and Android.
