The host of HBO's Last Week Tonight, John Oliver, this time aimed his arrow of sarcasm at the pointless ritual of changing the clocks to daylight saving time. Why do we move the clocks forward one hour? Who or what gains anything in the process? Whose idea was that anyway? If you don't already know, the Germans should be thanked for changing the clock to summer time.
In the HBO show Last Week Tonight is John Oliver in a controversial and almost universally derided manner tackled the topic of changing the clock to daylight saving time. Contrary to popular American opinion, why are we turning the clock forward in the first place, the practice has nothing to do with farmers. We can thank you for changing the clock to the Germans, who moved the first hour to summer time in the First World War, as this is supposed to save fuel. One more hour of sunlight meant less fuel consumption for artificial lighting and thus more fuel remained for the army.
In Slovenia these days, the clock is turned back due to the directive of the European Parliament and the Council on the regulation of summer time since 1983. Don't forget, we're going to move the clock back this year March 29 at 2 am.
