One day you put some tomato sauce in the fridge, and the next day you're greeted by the yellow shadow of past lunches - despite a thorough washing. There's a way to make plastic breathe again.

The yellow appearance on plastic containers is a common occurrence that can reduce the desire to use the containers and even raise doubts about their cleanliness. However, there are ways to solve this problem - without much effort.

Why do plastic containers turn yellow?

With years of use, repeated heating of food, a combination of spicy dishes and prolonged exposure to fats or tomato sauces, the plastic starts to discolor. Food coloring, heat, and oxygen trigger chemical reactions that set the surface of the dish. But you don't have to throw that dish away—the yellow tint is not permanent and can be removed with a little effort.

The power of baking soda and water

One of the most natural and effective methods is a paste made from baking soda and some water. Mix them together to form a thick paste, then apply it to the yellowed part of the container. Rub gently with a soft sponge and leave for about 20 minutes. Then rinse well with warm water. The surface will be visibly brighter and cleaner.

Lemon and sunlight – natural bleach

Freshly squeezed lemon juice acts as an acidic cleaning solution, and the sun activates its bleaching effect with UV rays. Coat the container with lemon juice and leave it in direct sunlight for up to two hours. After the process is complete, simply rinse and wash as usual. The result is a naturally and effectively removed yellowness.

A combination of vinegar and baking soda

Baking soda and vinegar together create a foamy reaction, which breaks down stubborn stains. Sprinkle baking soda on the yellowed surfaces and add vinegar. When foam appears, leave for a few minutes to take effect. Wipe with a clean sponge in circular motions and rinse. The surface will be shiny and fresh again.

Prevent the reappearance of yellowness

To prevent your plastic from discoloring again, follow a few simple steps. Store foods such as tomato sauces, curries or pumpkins in glass containers. Wash the container immediately after use, do not leave food leftovers for too long, and avoid heating strongly colored foods in the microwave.
