Lecture by dr. Tadeja Jakopič
The Sovereign Order of Knights of Malta is the fourth oldest ecclesiastical order and the oldest crusading order. It was founded before 1099 in Jerusalem and cared for pilgrims, the poor and the sick, and offered them military protection. Since it was originally a regular shelter next to the church of St. John the Baptist, they took him as their patron and were named after him. With their lives and work, the members are inspired by the eight blessed ones of Jesus, the symbolism of which is represented by the octagonal Maltese cross, which the knights wear on their tunics and around their necks, and all members of the Maltese Aids wear on their uniforms. The role of the order in the past and today will be presented at the lecture.
