In their history, they have become so one of the greatest classic rock bands of their era, although they seem to be a band that has had everything bad happen to them in this world - in late 1977, during a promotional tour the plane with part of the group crashed, the crash was fatal for lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines, tour manager Dean Kilpatrick, the pilot and co-pilot—and a band that had broken up a hundred times before to start again. Even when the golden era of southern rock was over, Lynryrd Skynyrd successfully continued their story. Of the members who wrote the band's history, only one remains in the band today guitarist Gary Rossington. In 2012, they released their fourteenth album Last of a Dyin' Breed.
