Maderia is considered one of the safest European destinations, earning it the flattering title of leading island holiday destination. If the island, which belongs to Portugal, once attracted mainly older clientele due to its mild climate, this is far from the case anymore.

The island, which is located several thousand kilometers away from Lisbon, in the middle of the Atlantic, with its pleasant climate, invites tourists all year round. Madeira is a place where you can admire blooming paradise flowers and immerse yourself in unspoilt nature that will instantly enchant you. For many years, its charm attracted mainly the older generation, who were looking for an escape from the cold winter, but today the island is full of young people. They flock there from all over the world in search of experiences and active holidays that offer a wide range of sports from hiking to cycling.

Among the lush vegetation in Madeira, you will undoubtedly catch your eye Strelitzia, a beautiful orange flowering plant that earned the name "Birds of Paradise" abroad. Due to the favorable climate on this volcanic archipelago, we can admire the blooming plantations, smell the pleasant sea air and bask in the warm rays of the sun all year round.

Madeira is also an island of diversity. From volcanic black sand beaches that flirt with the Atlantic, avalanche pools in Porto Moniz, to lush green forests and cliffs on cape of St. Lawrence, looking towards Africa. It is located between the central massif and the Paul de Serra plateau Nun Valley, the water source of the island, full of levadas and canals. The central part of the island consists of a mountainous area, where you can drive yourself 1,800 meters above sea level and see the mountain massif, which offers breathtaking sunrises.

When to Madeira?

As already mentioned, they are summers in Madeira are hot and dry, and the winters are mild and humid. If you want to combine your trip with soaking in the pools, then choose the summer months, when temperatures reach up to 30 °C. Warm winds coming from Africa often bless the island with warmer weather than on the mainland. Temperatures thus rarely drop below 20 °C, and due to the pleasant climate, the most recommended time to visit is spring or summer, as rainy days are more common in winter.

How to discover the beauties of Madeira?

If you want to explore the island in detail, then we suggest car rental, as public transport connections are really bad. The ER101 route will take you around the island and help you explore it thoroughly. We recommend at least a week, but ten days will be perfect for a complete trip without rushing. The car allows you to stop and admire the magnificent views along the way, so it definitely makes sense to contact the rent-a-car agencies before your trip. You only need a valid driver's license, most agencies also require that it is no more than one year old.

How can I help preserve the environment?

On Madeira, you can find a range of activities with which you can contribute to a more sustainable treatment of the island. Many agencies are also trying to raise awareness about the importance of rich flora and fauna. Lobosonda Agency takes you to whale and dolphin watching located in the south-west of the island. This allows you to observe these magnificent creatures from a distance, while the guides teach you how you can contribute to the protection of aquatic life.
