If you want some lively city life, go to Fort de France, where you will pay for your lunch in euros, since the island, as part of France, belongs to the European Union. Fun, isn't it? So if you want to experience French chic in a Caribbean way, then Martinique is the right address for your vacation.

When to Martinique?

The best month to visit this Caribbean gem is May, although temperatures are pleasant throughout the year, avoiding the tourist season between December and April. In summer and autumn, the chances of tropical cyclones are higher, so it pays to catch the season before that.

What should I see in Martinique?

If you think that the island is only for lounging on the beach, you are wrong. Nevertheless, let's start this compilation by listing the beautiful beaches where you can lie on the white sand and dive into the crystal clear Caribbean Sea. The most beautiful beaches are located in the surrounding area Sainte-Anne in the south of the island, a small town with colorful houses stands surrounded by shining sand and sea waves.

The most beautiful beach is without a shadow of a doubt Les Salines, suitable especially for families, as even the youngest can play in the calm waters. Martinique is also a real paradise for snorkelers, who can admire colorful coral reefs and tropical fish under the sea surface. Diving enthusiasts will also enjoy themselves, as there are quite a few diving spots on the east coast.

In the interior of the island, Martinique's wilder, volcanic side emerges. Magnificent Mount Pelee, which rises above the northern side of the island, completely devastated the island in 1902 with a volcanic eruption. Nowadays, you can even climb to the top if you have some fitness. Hiking is the way to experience the uninhabited nature of a tropical island in its full glory. You can go on the La Caravelle hiking trail or choose one of the trails on the Sainte-Anne peninsula. You can also visit the ruins Chateau Dubuc, manor houses from the 17th century, where you can combine the observation of cultural heritage with hiking.

You also spend some time in the capital Fort de France, where traces of slavery are visible. Visit the Slave Memorial where 20 white stone sculptures flirt with Diamond Beach and the Caribbean Sea. The monument was erected in memory of the slaves who lost their lives in a sea accident in 1830. The Jardin de Balata botanical garden is also a real feast for the eyes, where you can enjoy the view of colorful flowers and lush growth and tall palm trees. It is considered one of the most beautiful gardens in the Caribbean, so don't miss it.
