In the southeast of Africa, in the embrace of the Indian Ocean, you can find the beautiful tropical island of Mauritius, which is surrounded by smaller, equally beautiful island pearls. Are you looking for white sandy beaches, turquoise blue sea waves, but also magnificent nature? This is Mauritius.

Mauritius rises from the waves of the Indian Ocean like a beautiful fairytale apparition. Like paradise on earth, dotted with beaches, palm trees, rainforests and mountains. Mauritius is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, and not only because of its beautiful beaches, which are among the most desirable on the planet. The island is famous for its beautiful unspoilt nature, interesting rugged mountains and forests. Due to its diversity, it is popular both among newlyweds who choose it for their honeymoon, as well as among young people and families. Also for the sake of the wide range of accommodation, ranging from luxury resorts to local rooms.

When to Mauritius?

The best time to visit Mauritius is between October and December when temperatures are at their highest. Due to the pleasant subtropical climate, the island is worth visiting all year round.

What should I see in Mauritius?

Did we mention the dreamy sandy beaches? There is really no shortage of them on the island, bordered on one side by the turquoise water of the ocean, on the other by green palm groves. Drive to the west coast where you will find a range of excellent diving spots with spectacular coral reefs and lagoons. But Mauritius offers much more than just lounging in the sun. We can start exploring in the capital Port Louis. Visit a picturesque market or bazaar and admire the products of local artisans and taste the exotic produce of local farmers. Locals hang out and gather in front of the Caudan Waterfront, and on the streets of the city you will also be able to spot a variety of street artists, as well as unique small shops.

History buffs should not miss the Blue Penny Museum, as well as The Stamp Museum and the Natural History Museum, where you will learn about the history of the island. Mauritius also offers a range of activities for lovers of unspoiled nature. In the hinterland of the island, which is covered by rainforest, you can find a national park Black River Gorges. A protected piece of the island that is home to many protected plant and animal species. Hiking enthusiasts can head to the mountain village of Chamarel, which offers magnificent views of the island and the countryside. There are also a number of local restaurants run by locals and for which the place is famous. If you are traveling with children, visit the Museum of Illusions or Terres de 7 Couleurs, and rum lovers should visit the distillery Rhumerie de Chamarel.

If you want a challenge, then climb Mount Brabant, whose peak rises dramatically above the south-west coast of the island. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and people who escaped slavery once lived here. When they learned that a group of officers had come after them, they preferred to die rather than return to slavery. According to legend, the officers only wanted to tell them that slavery was over, but despite this, this place remains sacred, just because of the views and their sacrifice. Unspoiled nature awaits you in Île aux Aigrettes on the southeast coast, which is home to giant tortoises and a variety of colorful birds. When it comes to wildlife, Mauritius does not disappoint.

On the west coast of the island, you can watch dolphins and, between July and October, also humpback whales swimming past. Mauritius is also worth seeing from the sea, so choose one of the boat trips and drive all the way to Île aux Deux Cocos or Île aux Cerfs. The small island of Rodrigues is also charming, which seems to have stood in another era. Locals here really know how to enjoy the day and do not bother themselves with unnecessary worries. You can also watch giant tortoises or go on a snorkeling or diving trip.

How to explore Mauritius?

The easiest way is to rent a car. You might even be seduced by one of the locals, although most of them prefer to travel by motorbike. You can also choose from drivers if you don't want to get behind the wheel yourself.
