Wi-Fi could become a thing of the past after a while. Li-Fi, which uses light to establish an Internet connection, will soon be available to Internet users.
Li-Fi indicates a phrase Light Fidelity, which in translation means loyalty to the light. The system uses LED technology, which enables producing a broadband internet connection. Instead of the radio waves through which Wi-Fi works, it uses light waves. Data travels in both directions at speeds beyond the reach of the human eye.
The biggest problem with Wi-Fi is that it has a hard time picking up a signal in rooms with thick walls, such as those found in hospitals. This will not cause headaches for Li-Fi, as it will be able to transmit data using the light emitted by ceiling lights. When establishing a wireless connection, Li-Fi will also be used powering lamps, street lights and other electronic devices.
At Philips, in which the technology is being developed, they believe that light represents untapped potential. Li-Fi has been under development since 2011. We can expect that it will not be available to the general public in the near future.
