What astronomical dances in the sky await us in 2023?
Delta Aquariums: A mesmerizing dance performance in the sky
From mid-July to mid-August, the Earth finds itself on its way around the Sun nearby of the remnants of comet 96P/Machholz. This creates a unique opportunity to observe the meteor shower called the Delta Aquarids. This magical phenomenon achieves its own peak between July 28 and 29, when you will be able to see up to 20 meteors per hour.
Observing Delta Aquarids can present some challenges, especially if the Moon is visible in the sky. In particular, it is about the Full Moon, which this year appears exactly at the peak time. However, at its peak on July 29, a little after midnight, the Moon will have already set below the horizon.
The Perseids: An Inspiring Show of Shooting Stars
The Perseids are considered one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year. The meteors of this extraordinary phenomenon originate from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. They are active from mid-July to early September, but reach their peak at night between August 12 and 13. On these days, with a clear sky, you can see just about anything 50 to 100 meteors per hour.
The advantage of observing the Perseids is that the Moon will not be too much of an obstacle. Meteors, which enter our atmosphere are usually larger and thus brighter, leaving a longer trail in the sky.
How to observe a meteor shower
Best in good weather. The good news is that July 28 is a Friday and August 12 is a Saturday - ideal days for sightings.
Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, bring a chair or mat and get comfortable. You don't need a telescope or binoculars to observe the meteor shower, as the glimpses will be visible to the naked eye.
If you don't see any meteors during the peak of the Delta Aquarids, we advise you to give your eyes about half an hour to adjust to the dark and avoid using your phone during this time.
