The first step begins with breathing. Deep, slow, and steady breathing is the foundation for calming the body. This lowers the heart rate, relaxes the muscles, and gradually calms the mind.
The second step focuses on the face. Even if you don't feel tension, your facial muscles are often holding it in. Close your eyes, relax your forehead, soften the area around your eyes, relax your jaw, and lower your tongue from the roof of your mouth.
The third step leads to the shoulders and arms. The shoulders should be completely relaxed and fall down. The arms should be at the side of the body or gently placed on the stomach. The goal is to feel heavy - as if the arms are sinking into the mattress.
Step four – visualization. Once the body is fully relaxed, it's the mind's turn.
Visualization is a key element. Imagine yourself lying in a boat in the middle of a calm lake, with a clear blue sky above you. If that doesn’t work, imagine yourself in a hammock, surrounded by complete darkness. Let your thoughts gently drift away. If they start to wander, gently bring them back and repeat to yourself, “Relax, relax…”
