Fausta carries within her a disease that has stolen her soul. Not a disease caused by bacteria or viruses - these are traumas that were passed on to her with the "milk of bitterness" by her mother, one of the countless women who were abused and raped during two decades of armed conflict between Maoist guerrillas and the Peruvian army. Although that terrible time has now passed, it lives on in girls like Fausta. Her disease is called fear. When her mother dies, Fausta must finally face her fears. A series of unexpected complications occur that dramatically change her life. Her mother's death finally sends her on a journey to break free from the yoke of fear. A sublime but violent confrontation with a dark period of recent Peruvian history. The film won the Golden Bear and the FIPRESCI Award for Best Film in Berlin 2009 and was nominated for the Foreign Language Oscar in 2010.
