A lonely writer (played by the excellent Joaquin Phoenix) develops an unusual relationship with his new operating system, which is designed to meet his every need.
The film takes place in the near future and depicts life by Theodore Twombly, a complex spiritual man who makes a living by writing touching and personal letters for other people. After the end of a long-term relationship and divorce, Theodor is strongly attracted to a new one advanced operating system, which is actually independent artificial intelligence. After the system connects, Theodor hears a woman's voice and realizes it Samantha. But she is nothing but computer program, who is extremely sensitive and surprisingly humorous and capable of emoting. Soon, a strong bond is formed between them, her needs and desires grow along with his, friendship grows into a love relationship, ... All well and good, if it weren't for the inevitable fact that there can be no relationship between them physical contact. Can you be satisfied with only feelings of affection and love in a virtual and imaginary world?
