Movie roles that actors only played because they had to

Edward Norton (Italian job)

At some point, we all have a task at work that we don't like. But how would you feel if you had to make a whole movie without really wanting to? This was the case with these actors who played roles in famous films only because their hands were tied by contract.

Actors often sign contracts with film companies that, like athletes, can tie their hands for a while. So they sometimes have to play roles that they don't like in the least if they want to avoid skyrocketing damages for breach of contract. Check out which actors got caught in these kinds of traps and which movie characters they were forced to perform.

Val Kilmer - Top Gun (1986)

You still remember the attractive, but not very polite Iceman from the cult movie Top Gun, right? Val Kilmer this role made him a first-rate star, but in truth he did not want to act in this film. Val Kilmer signed a contract with Paramount for three roles and was therefore obliged to step into the shoes of Iceman. Kilmer later grew fond of the role and has repeatedly stated that he would be happy to star in a sequel if it ever came to that.

Jennifer Garner – Elektra (2005)

Movies with female leads just don't sell well in Hollywood and that was the case with the movie Elektra with Jennifer Garner in the main role. The film, which has a modest 4.8 rating on IMDB, was a financial disaster, grossing only $24 million. Jennifer told her then-boyfriend Michael Vartan that she thought the film was terrible and that she was only in it because of her contract to play Elektra in the TV series Daredevil.

You didn't see Whoopi Goldberg in this role? You haven't missed anything. On IMDB, viewers rated the film with a disappointing 2.4. Whoopi accepted the role without knowing what she was really getting herself into. Two years later, she was called to shoot a movie, and since she didn't want to act, the whole thing even went to court. Although Whoopi was awarded $7 million in compensation, she still had to play the role. The film, however, went directly to video stores.

Edward Norton - The Italian Mission (2003)

Another player cornered by contract is excellent Edward Norton. Having signed a three-film deal, he had to play the role of Steve in the film Italian Mission. If he didn't show up for the shoot, he would be hit with multimillion-dollar compensation. He played the role - as always perfectly - and the film also received a good response from the audience. Club Norton advised his fans to skip watching this role of his.
