Obsolete rule:

Always wait for a date invitation.

New rule:

Take what you want.
We don't mean that women should turn into aggressive man killers, we just think that sometimes a successful love life requires more than just passively waiting for the prince charming of your dreams. Invite him out and once and for all stop looking at your smartphone constantly...

Obsolete rule:

If a man and a woman meet at a social gathering, it is automatically a date.

New rule:

Make sure where the dog paw prays.
Platonic relationships are extremely common these days, so don't assume that an invitation to hang out is just a date. If he invites someone else to the meeting, know that something more will have to be done in order for the two of you to really agree on a romantic date in the end.

Obsolete rule:

The newer the relationship, the more money to spend on a date.

New rule:

Excessive pressure about money and other expectations can turn a casual get-together into a real nightmare.
A carriage ride is not necessary for a perfect date, a simple dinner or a light lunch, which should be spent in a happy and relaxed atmosphere, will suffice.

Obsolete rule:

He is in charge of planning the perfect date.

New rule:

Both are involved in planning.
Planning a date is no longer just his domain, so don't bore him with: "I don't know, I don't care where we're going..." Take the reins and invite him somewhere where you feel comfortable and relaxed...

Obsolete rule:

Be fashionable.

New rule:

Being late is out of style and maybe even a little mean.
Can you imagine how nervous you would be if he left you waiting for an empty table in a restaurant? Would you feel comfortable considering if he will even show up for the date? Being late these days no longer has a Hollywood feel, but just a bad taste of unreliability.

Obsolete rule:

Show interest in his interests.

New rule:

Show interest only if you are truly interested.
Don't pretend you love 90s prog rock when you actually know all the lyrics to Taylor Swift songs and have no idea what prog rock is. Do yourself a favor and be honest, because that's what you expect from him too, right?

Obsolete rule:

He pays.

New rule:

There is no rule.
If you're still getting to know each other, it's best to split the bill. Never offer to pay if you really don't want to, because it's not fair to write him off as soon as he accepts the offer. If you think things are going in the right direction and he wants to pay the full amount, let him do it, and you pay the amount next time, or surprise him with movie/concert tickets for your next date.
