After more than a decade, they have re-introduced the modern version of the Volkswagen minibus – an icon that first hit the roads in 1950 and achieved legendary recognition among the “flower children” of the 60s and 70s. Since then, they have sold more than 10 million models.
The interior is minimalistic, with only a speedometer and a large screen in the middle of the dashboard, front and rear folding benches that can be converted into an emergency bed. Chief designers Walter DeSilva, Geoup and Klaus Bischoff ensured that the new look will retain the main features of the legendary minibus – a big box with smooth lines, a huge Volkswagen logo on the front, a slightly curved windshield and classic doors instead of winged sliding doors.
Volkswagen Microbus will be available with a turbo four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engine and, in all likelihood, with a hybrid engine. It is not yet known when, if at all, it will see the light of day.
