Origami Car: Lexus made a life-size driving car out of cardboard!

Lexus IS sedan made of cardboard

Lexus, Toyota's luxury brand, recently surprised with a driving version of the Lexus IS made of origami. The life-size car, which is a cut-out image of the IS, boasts 1,700, not horsepower, but cardboard poles, and is powered by an electric motor. Extraordinary. Only when it rains, you better leave the Origami Car, as it is affectionately called, in the garage.

From Japanese Luxury an interesting innovation is coming. If you look at the car from a distance, you'll think it's a regular Lexus IS model. In fact, it is about origami version of the Lexus mid-range model IS sedan, which has been on the market since 1998, and until now Lexus has introduced two generations. We can no longer call the "successor" an iron horse, but cardboard horse. An innovative version has been produced from 1700 recycled cardboard sheets, laser-cut, and hides under the hood electric motor, so it can actually be driven. For practical and legal reasons, it is difficult to imagine the scenario that we will ever actually see it on the roads.

Origami car design is mirror image of the original IS Lexus model, and the Japanese teamed up with the London company LaserCut Works and Scales and Models in its production. The car is fully equipped, it has functional doors, working headlights and spinning wheels, thanks to the electric motor, which is mounted on a steel and aluminum frame, and also drivable. And how did they make it? First, they were supplied with a 3D model of the IS, which they then disassembled into key parts such as the body, dashboard, seats and wheels. They were then digitally rendered in 10mm “slices”, creating the two-dimensional profiles needed to laser cut each of the 1,700 sheets of cardboard. They used mackerel to hold everything together water-based wood glue, and they needed to make it three months. Would you have it?
