Every year on Thanksgiving Day, the American shopping chain Macy's organizes a parade of giant flying heroes of movies and cartoons, which wind along the west side of Central Park to the rhythm of loud bands.
Parades, parades and more parades! But there are none more than American ones, especially New York ones Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which is attended by as many as 3.5 million people and an additional 50 million television viewers every year. More than 10,000 performers bring the best bands from all 50 states, majorettes on decorated floats, helium-filled giant entertainers, a host of Hollywood stars and, of course, the one and only Santa Claus. Long way marches (and flies) from 77th Street to Columbus Circle, along the southern flank of Central Park, down to the intersection of 6th Avenue and 34th Street, all the way to the home of one of the largest department stores, Macy's.
This year's parade, already the 87th, was almost prevented by strong gusts of wind for the first time in history. But then, at extremely low temperatures, it only offered a three-hour spectacle of flying friends Spiderman, Hello Kitty and even Uncle Sam, as well as a 14-meter-high balloon in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz. It was also possible to see some of the performing stars, such as comedian Jimmy Fallon, American Idol star Kellie Pickler and singer Cher.
