Photokina 2018: what we saw and what they predicted

A completely new photography battle that began to appear in the summer finally flared up at this year's Photokina 2018. On the world's biggest stage for everyone who still cares about classic photography, Canon and Nikon loudly promote their recently introduced new systems, Sony emphasizes its technological advantages, but there are still new challengers, the most high-profile of them being the twin trio Leica-Sigma- Panasonic. In our opinion, the most interesting camera that you can already hold in your hand is made by Fujifilm.

Mirrorless is the current direction of this industry. Canon with EOS R and Nikon with the Z series have already started selling their full-frame devices, which have abandoned the classic prism and are smaller and lighter, in Panasonic but they also could not stand idly by. Many people like their cameras, especially for video, but the m4/3 sensor is still small and therefore limited in terms of quality. For the new system, they found an ally where they have had it since they have been making digital cameras, in Wetzlar, Germany, at Leica. Its L mount, already used in SL cameras, is apparently suitable, and the cameras and lenses based on it will be developed and produced by the Japanese Sigma.

But Panasonic S1 and S1R they are the ones who overshadowed everything else from this fraternity. Both are claimed to be uncompromising and aimed at professionals (Canon's and Nikon's novices really aren't), they'll have advanced focus, in-body image stabilizer, large and high-resolution electronic viewfinder, dual SD and XQD card slots, three-axis rotatable screen. They also promise good ergonomics, but the first prototype is slightly larger than its competitors. For the videographers, it will be important to record in 4K at 60 frames per second. The S1R will have a sensor with a car 47 million points, and the S1 will surpass them for weaker computers that are easier to digest 24 million.
There will be three lenses in the beginning, in addition to the existing sinfully expensive Leica ones. They will make up the holy trinity 50mm f/1.4, 24-105 and 70-200, you'd be surprised by anything else. Ten are promised by the end of 2020. And some Sigma. It won't even be that late, because everything doesn't go on sale until next spring anyway. So you still have half a year to save. If you stay with the m4/3 system, then for the 10-25 f/1.7 lens, which will cover the entire most common range (calculated 20-50mm) with excellent light output.

For those who are not even satisfied with the quality of full format, they will now be able to look at a medium format mirrorless camera for a very affordable price of less than five thousand euros. Not only that, Fujifilm GFX 50R it is also attractive to the eye and pleasant in the hand, as it is for a device with such a large sensor small and light (775 g). With the new 50 mm f/3.5 pancake lens, it will be an almost unnoticeable street camera with superb quality and details in photos. However, Fuji went in another direction. They also announced mirrorless medium format camera with one hundred megapixels. With image stabilization in the body and phase focus points.

Ricoh has announced a new super wallet GRIII, which, like its predecessor, will have an aps-c size sensor (like entry-level dslrs) and a lens with a focal length of 28 mm, but this time it will be 24 megapixels, a better peephole and some other modern improvements.

An increasingly pervasive manufacturer of 360-degree recording cameras Insta360 he upped the ante again with a promising video action camera with an even smoother, stress-free image by GoPro Hero7 Black. In the trailer, the image also stops several times using the "stop motion" technique, which may also hint at some such functionality.

Let's not forget Slovenian Lumulabs. The guys have expanded the offer to three light meters. The small half-domes still plug into the iPhone's lightning connector, but the big innovation in the Lumu Pro model is measuring the color temperature of (studio) flashes. The Lumu Power 2 is an improved version of its predecessor with new sensors and a shinier metal ring, while the Lumu Lite 2 measures the basics - room light and flash power. The rest, which is missing from the "more powerful" Lumu 2, can be unlocked in the app.
