Korean illustrator Suzy Lee created one of the most beautiful picture books of recent years, which received several awards, including the gold medal of the American Association of Illustrators.
The picture book Val speaks to us without words, without text, it speaks only with illustrations and feelings of three simple elements: a sunny day, a curious girl and a playful wave. The book does not need words for a strong and intense address, which is excellently shown by the picture book, which talks about deep friendship, through the interplay of the play of a girl, seagulls and the ocean. At the same time, books without text allow for a more intense experience and observation of the illustrations, while children can tell their own stories, possibly relating them to their own experiences. In the aforementioned picture book, we observe a girl who came to the shore. She entered into a peculiar, witty and humorous communication with the wave and the waves. In the game, they became friends, got to know each other, got excited... A simple drawing with charcoal combined with tempera absorbs us into immense childlike joy and wonder.
